A rolling backpack combines backpack straps with a telescopic handle and built-in wheels, allowing it to be carried or rolled depending on the surroundings. Our Blast 43L and Blast Pro 43L Roller Backpacks both support three carrying modes: rolling, wearing on the back and lifting with the top or side handles. This flexibility can be useful during journeys that include airport terminals, stairs, public transport and city streets, where relying on only one carrying method may be inconvenient.
A backpack with wheels can reduce the need to carry a fully packed bag through airports, stations and other places with long, smooth walkways. It also gives you the option to use the shoulder straps when you reach stairs or uneven ground. A standard travel backpack is generally lighter because it does not need wheels or a telescopic handle, making it more suitable for journeys involving extended walking. The better option depends on how often you expect to roll the bag versus carry it.
It may be possible, but airlines use the bag’s complete exterior dimensions rather than its capacity alone. Both the Blast 43L and Blast Pro 43L measure approximately 21.7 × 13.8 × 9.1 inches (55 × 35 × 23 cm). These measurements should be compared with the cabin baggage limits of the specific airline and fare, including any weight restriction. Travellers who prefer a rigid shell and spinner wheels may find traditional carry-on luggage more suitable, while a wheeled backpack provides more carrying flexibility.
Both of our current roller backpack models include a lockable compartment designed for laptops up to 15.6 inches. Keeping the laptop in a dedicated compartment separates it from clothing and other travel items, while also making it easier to access during security checks or work stops. The bags also include an RFID-blocking side pocket for smaller essentials such as cards or travel documents. Laptop dimensions can vary even when the screen size is the same, so compare the device’s complete measurements with the compartment before packing.
To roll the bag, extend the telescopic handle and keep the backpack straps stored or secured so they do not drag near the wheels. When approaching stairs, crowded transport or a surface that is difficult to roll across, retract the handle and use the shoulder straps. The wheel cover can help keep the wheels from rubbing against your clothing while the bag is worn. The Blast Pro also includes a detachable hip belt, which can provide additional support when the packed bag needs to be carried for longer periods.
Rolling backpacks are most convenient on airport floors, pavements and other relatively smooth surfaces. The Blast 43L uses smooth-rolling PU wheels, while the Blast Pro has 70 mm inline wheels. Gravel, high kerbs, steep steps and heavily uneven paths can make any wheeled bag harder to pull and may place more strain on its wheels. In these situations, the shoulder straps or carrying handles provide a more practical option. This ability to change modes is particularly useful when one journey includes several different surfaces.
A 43L rolling backpack can hold clothing, toiletries, electronics and other essentials for a short or moderately long trip, but the actual trip length depends on packing habits and the type of clothing carried. Thick jackets and multiple pairs of shoes use considerably more room than lightweight outfits. Both current models include multiple compartments to separate a laptop, documents and smaller items from the main packing area. Packing cubes may also help organise the rectangular interior, although they do not change the bag’s actual capacity.
The Blast 43L uses water- and wear-resistant ripstop nylon with a PFAS-free water-repellent finish. Its flexible exterior and 6.6 lb (3 kg) weight may suit travellers who want a lighter fabric construction. The Blast Pro 43L weighs approximately 6.7 lb (3.03 kg) and uses a heavier-duty TPU exterior with YKK zippers. This construction may be preferable for frequent travel or greater resistance to everyday wear. Water-resistant materials can help with light exposure to moisture, but the bags should not be treated as fully waterproof.
